Hailing a Taxi
Make sure you are standing in a place where an oncoming car has space to pull in away from the traffic or it won't stop.
Safety
Buy reflective armbands or material to be safe on dark roads. If you don't like wearing it, then just tie it to the back of a pack you wear all the time.
