There are many methods of change, if you've found your way to this site then perhaps you're already interested in them. The essential idea of all these techniques is similar, for example, if you keep repeating to yourself how happy or rich you are, the natural flow of your moment-to-moment dialogue will change, thus will your inner-philosophy and so life; or maybe if you visualise health, you'll change the moment-to-moment pictures, and so again, philosophy and life. The problem is, though you may do these or similar practices for an hour a day, as soon as you stop, the mind reverts to its usual state. It's like standing in a stream and lifting up boulders to change the perverted flow, but the rock is so heavy that you can only lift it up for a short time, then drop it back to where it was and so the flow lapses to its previous state. You must have noticed this, a time when you were depressed or fuming mad about something and you took a deep-breath and decided to 'just forget it' or 'pull myself together'. For a time, while you're consciously trying, you can shake it off; as soon as your mind is unwatched, it reverts to it's negative spin
It isn't practical to live the whole of our lives in meditation (at this point!), is there a way to make 'replacement thoughts' stick?
You've now discovered the philosophies from which consciousness seems to flow (and so your life and circumstances), in the following pages we'll learn a number of inner and outer techniques to effect an immutable and miraculous change.
Obviously, you're not going to permanently change the whole stream of consciousness instantly, though it the end that will be the case. In the beginning there will be certain optimum times, eventually they'll be no time, the practice will become you! There's no need to meditate on peace and happiness once peace and happiness are the 'default course' of your stream.
Think of a time you were stressed out, perhaps the boss was shouting at you. You're fuming mad inside and at that point the Stymoi is strong. You leave the boss's presence and all the inner-dialogue and pictures flow from the philosophy This company stinks, and you wind up - that is the hardest time to change. You go home, and upon leaving the you car, the neighbours dog attacks. The foam around its lips, now smeared across your torn skirt, probably indicates rabies. As the animal stops it's fury for a last, single bite, it's jaws slowly closing, teeth knifing towards the bone of your shin - you're unlikely to have the presence of mind to repeat the affirmation you adopted yesterday - I love animals; animals are my friends.
In the beginning, times of stress aren't the best occasions to challenge the 'automatic flow' of the mind. It hasn't developed the way it has to hurt you, it's developed this way to protect you. After a number of bad experiences of being bitten by dogs you may have the philosophy All dogs are bad, - and the good thing it you will avoid them and be bitten less. The bad thing is that the mind will attract 'evidence' to support the philosophy, but the fourth force of your mind will manifest it to 'prove' the philosophy. You will be unknowingly attracting vicious dogs into your life.
When you're safe and relaxed (without dogs hanging off your limbs) it's easier to consciously direct the stream. You could lie down and visualise playing with friendly dogs. Now visualising playful dogs might not do you much good if your neighbours pet tries to kill you each afternoon, but this problem flowed in the first place from the stones in your stream (honestly).
It's very hard to lift the rocks (philosophies) out of the stream, but sometimes you control the way the water (train of thought) flows. Then following pages shall show you how to change the 'default flow', the way it flows automatically, without your concentration - and when water surges fast enough over an obstruction, even the largest rocks shall be worn away in time.
Unlike anything else I've read, this system has two methods, inner and outer - all designed to redirect the flow and alter it's intensity. The coming outer-method will truly and endlessly change your waking mind and life, though it's foundation is the inner-methods. For these inner-methods, it helps if you're relaxed when you first practice them, for the reasons explained above. When you're wide awake and the stream is raging, it's very hard to reign the flow, if you're not wholly in control of the current then these boulders can't be worn down or even moved.
In fact, the closer you are to a trance the better, as the less the stream is flowing by itself, the more you control it. Therefore, this page is about relaxation. There is already so much written about breathing, hypnosis, mantras, and so many other ways to achieve relaxation/trance, however, sometimes these techniques work and sometimes they don't. Through trying most of them over the years I've realised that they all neglect to mention one thing, the one thing that unites them all and makes any of them work.
A long time ago I was deeeply into hypnosis. Sometimes I could make it work and sometimes I couldn't, then I realised why. So say I was counting down to relax myself; 10; 9; 8; etc. I would be telling myself I was entering trance, but I would be focusing on the words.
Recall a time when you were deeply relaxed, you know the kind of experience, where you stare unmoving at something, completely lost in your thoughts, 'miles away'. Time appears to have slowed and your senses are heightened. The more relaxed you became, the more your senses are withdrawn and your inner-senses may come into play.
Contrast this experience of spontaneous relaxation with a failed attempt at hypnotism. You are desperately concentrating on counting or breathing, trying to relax, and the concentration itself prevents it. Here's the secret; it's all a question of focus. It doesn't work when you're focusing on the method, like counting or breathing or whatever you're doing. You must practice your method,
say chanting a word, until it becomes so automatic that it doesn't require any conscious thought. Then focus on your senses; every nerve in your body. Acutely listen to the sounds around you. Stare intensely into the blackness of your closed eyelids. Recall a time when you were deeply relaxed, near a state of trance, like when you woke up from an operation, or dropped onto the bed, exhausted from a long hike (the Happiness Hike?), the way you felt just before you lost consciousness to sleep. Remember those sensations while concentrating on your sensations now; you can 'will' them to feel that way. If you pretend you really are exhausted and tired and acutely watch every sensation in your body, expecting to feel that way again - you shall.
Also, there are times you are relaxed or in the right state anyway i.e. falling asleep and waking up. You can also use these natural periods for your inner-work.
So, you know the importance of relaxation, you can achieve it (or are getting there) - what do you do when you are in that state? How about changing your life, acquiring all the things you want, without fear of attachment or loss - and to become whoever you want to be?
To be happy?
